#BobEzrin - Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) (1979)

Eén van de meest succesvolle producers van de jaren zeventig, de canadees Robert Alan Ezrin aka Bob Ezrin, krijgt deze week van ons alle aandacht.

Bob Ezrin had het op 'Berlin' van Lou Reed al eens geflikt met zijn eigen kids. Ze figureerden als huilebalken op The Kids, waar ongeveer iedereen en dan nog iemand ongemakkelijk van werd. Maar op Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) werden de kinderen vooral als superkoor gebruikt: “The thing is, if you want to touch people, most people respond to the sound of a child, for whatever reason. Whether it’s children laughing or children crying, that seems to be more touching than hearing the very same thing coming out of the mouth of an adult. In all the cases where I’ve used kids, it’s been for dramatic effect.”

Voor deze song kreeg hij van Roger Waters carte blanche: “Go ahead and waste your time doing a lot of silly stuff”. Bob Ezrin: “In the case of that song, that meant one verse and one chorus, then ‘out.’ But what I literally did was, I copied the track. If you listen to it, you can hear that it’s verse one and chorus one, played again, exactly the same. I made verse two and chorus two, and I put kids on that. I found a drum fill that wasn’t particularly good—that was just there to sort of join up the pieces—and put some kids on the second half and extended the song that way. The first time Roger heard it—with the children on there, and the second verse—he got it.”

Op 'The Wall', geschreven als een filmscript en vooral een project van Roger Waters, deed Ezrin zijn uiterste best om gitarist Dave Gilmour in het proces te betrekken. Zijn zin voor melodie en zijn emotionele insteek waren een meerwaarde, omdat ze danig verschilden van Waters. Ezrin: “Dave is more of a romantic, and sometimes a little more accessible, although the melody for Another Brick In The Wall is Roger’s.”

Wat er ook van zij: een meesterwerk en conceptplaat die live maar op een paar plaatsen kon gebracht worden en ook de laatste echte samenwerking was van Waters en Gilmour. Plots was de spreekwoordelijke wall ook een een wall tussen de twee keikoppen. Eentje die tot vandaag stand houdt.
