#BobEzrin - Alice Cooper - Elected (1973)
Eén van de meest succesvolle producers van de jaren zeventig, de canadees Robert Alan Ezrin aka Bob Ezrin, krijgt deze week van ons alle aandacht.
Eigenlijk was Alice Cooper Bob Ezrins eerste grote productiejob. Hij deed die job geruime tijd voor Vincent Furnier en die beschouwde hem als hun George Martin.
Hij was dan ook de geknipte figuur voor de harde dramatiek van Alice Cooper: “I’ve always liked brave and dramatic music. And I’ve always gravitated toward things that are ‘heavy,’ whether that’s heavy metal, or heavy orchestral or heavy themes.” Ezrin was dan ook een klassiek opgeleid muzikant die het producen aangeleerd kreeg van Guess Who-producer Jack Richardson. Hij was getuige van het optreden van Alice Cooper in de New Yorkse legendarische club Max’s Kansas City in 1970 op negentienjarige leeftijd en raakte er zo gebiologeerd door dat hij Richardson wist te overtuigen hem zijn kans te laten gaan.
Het partnerschap zou een reeks klassiekers opleveren ('Love It To Death' (1971), 'Killer' (1971), 'School’s Out' (1972) en 'Billion Dollar Babies' (1973) waarna zijn faam ook door anderen (Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd) opgemerkt werd. Alice Cooper aka Vincent Furnier over de samenwerking: "Bob and I are the only two that really know Alice. When we're writing or listening back to a song, we may look at each other and go, 'Alice would never say that'. We look at Alice in a third person: 'Listen to the way he sings this, Alice wouldn't sing it that way.' And that's how we treat Alice. Bob's the only one I would trust in the world to do that with me, because we both created the Alice character. Even when I'm doing albums with other producers, I run the songs past Bob. He sends me back a list of comments, and I take notes, then I fix whatever's wrong before going to the other producer."
Elected, afkomstig van 'Billion Dollar Babies', is een nummer dat ook al op debuut 'Pretties For You' uit 1969 stond onder een andere titel: Reflected. Ezrin overtuigde de groep ervan om het nummer, een krachtig anthem, opnieuw onder handen te nemen: “Well, we were nothing if not brave and sort of macho about our approach to music. And very melodramatic. The idea for Elected really sprang out of a casual conversation where we jokingly said, 'Why don’t we run Alice for president?' It was such a horrible field of candidates, and we were so disappointed with what was going on in America at the time, that we thought that would be a great irony. And of course we all looked at each other and thought, 'Why not?' We started thinking about what to do with the idea, and someone suggested we could make Reflected into Elected. We looked at the song, and thought, 'Hell, yes, we can do that.' So we took the song and made it brasher or 'brassier'. We added brass to it and made it speak like a hunting call.”
