White Denims twaalfde album heet... '12'

Op 6 december brengt Bella Union de plaat uit.

Met Light On werd er meteen ook een nieuwe single van White Denim gelanceerd. Daarover zegt zanger-gitarist James Petralli: "Light On is the first song I wrote for this new collection. It mostly took shape while I played my son's guitar, both of us crammed onto his twin mattress with my partner reading for all of us from my daughter's bed on the other side of the room. It is as influenced by Shel Silverstein as Elvin Jones. Over the years I spent creating this work, this particular song served as an encouragement and a consistent reminder to focus on the positive and to continue creating with little regard for potential outcomes."

Voor deze plaat koos Petralli voor een digitale aanpak, waarbij hij voor de eerste keer samenwerkte met een aantal muzikanten. "It was out of the window with even the idea of a band," zegt Petralli. "On this record, there are many bands, sometimes in the room with me, sometimes miles away in a remote collaboration, and that process opened up a lot of possibility for me." Het is meteen ook de eerste White Denim-plaat, waarvoor hij zelf fungeerde als engineer en producer.

Net als altijd ging hij op zoek naar allerlei inspiratie. In dit geval was dat Scritti Politti's 'Cupid & Psyche', maar hij nam ook Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Dennis Bovell in rekening. Wat betreft de songwriting, keek hij naar Nick Lowe, Jonathan Richman, Doug Sahm en Joe Jackson.
