RIP Jimmy Cliff

De reggaepionier werd eenentachtig jaar oud.

Jimmy Cliff, de man die zestig jaar geleden Jamaïca op de muzikale kaart zette, is overleden. Zijn echtgenote, Latifa Chambers, bevestigde dit via Instagram: “It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Liedjes als Wonderful World, Beautiful People en You Can Get It If You Really Want zitten zowat in het collectieve geheugen. In 1972 speelde hij ook mee in de film 'The Harder They Come', die reggae naar de VS bracht.

Jimmy Cliff werd geboren als James Chambers in 1944 in Jamaïca. Al op jonge leeftijd zong hij in de kerk, maar nadat hij Derrick Morgan een skasong hoorde brengen op de radio, begon hij zijn eigen muziek te schrijven. In 1965 woonde hij in Londen en zat hij bij Island Records, waar hij de hoger genoemde liedjes en ook Vietnam opnam, dat Bob Dylan "the best protest song ever written” noemde. Zelf zei hij over het nummer: “The essence of my music is struggle. What gives it the icing is the hope of love.”

In 1994 kende hij nog succes met een cover I Can See Clearly Now, dat in de film 'Cool Runnings' zat. Hij werd ingeleid in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, hetgeen hij “a great thrill and an honor” noemde.
