John Robb legt gothic scene bloot in nieuw boek

En dat gaat vaak verder dan muziek.

John Robb is naast (ex-)bassist van The Membranes ook schrijver en brein achter de Engelse website Louder Than War. Maar Robb heeft ook al de nodige boeken achter zijn naam staan, waaronder 'Punk Rock: An Oral History' en 'The North Will Rise Again: Manchester Music City 1976-1996'.

Zijn nieuwste boek zal 'The Art Of Darkness: The History of Goth' heten en verschijnt in maart. Gothmuziek is uiteraard het onderwerp. Maar hij legt het zelf ongetwijfeld beter uit: "My deep-dive into the wider culture begins with the goths sacking Ancient Rome, subsequently covering gothic architecture, Lord Byron and the romantic poets, European folk tales, Gothic architecture and painters; running through the first band to be called gothic - The Doors. We then journey through the Stooges and the Velvets and then on though glam rock and punk and the coalescing of all this into goth."

Voor het boek sprak de auteur met onder meer Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einstürzende Neubauten, Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure en Nick Cave.
