#WVDBM23 - Aksak Maboul - Saure Gurke (1977)

Het is weer Week Van De Belgische Muziek op de radio’s. Tof initiatief, maar hopelijk word er ook ee,s van de platgetreden paden afgeweken en gekozen voor de minder verwachte nummers van de Belpoppers. Wij doen alvast een bescheiden poging.

Dit was de openingstune van één van de programma's van "onze" FM Bruxel op 103.1 FM destijds in Brussel en was altijd al een ongelofelijk bezwerend stukje muziek. Pas veel later kwamen we erachter dat dit van een echte groep kwam, met name Aksak Maboul, het project van Brusselaar Marc Hollander en tevens oprichter van Cramned Discs (met ook nog Tuxedomoon, Minimal Compact en meer onder contract) en bovendien stichtend lid van de magische Honeymoon Killers.

Het dateert eigenlijk al van 1977 van de lp 'Onze Danses Pour Combattre La Migraine' en klinkt nu, meer dan veertig jaar later, nog fris en als iets nieuws. Tijdloos zeggen we dan. Aartsmoeilijk om dit te omschrijven en we zeggen dan ook: uniek! Marc Hollander legde het zelf nog het best uit in het webzine 'The Quietus': "My influences are many, this is a function of growing up in Brussels in the sixties. It’s a fractured country, right on the border between northern Europe and the Anglo Saxon Germanic world and the Latin part of Europe, and it’s a strange place. There’s no strong Belgian culture. It’s an accident of history really that this became a country. It has a culture of course, but it’s always open to influences. It belonged to the Spanish and the Austrians, and the French, and maybe as a result of that, or maybe because of other things, there is no strong musical identity. People are just open to stuff that came from everywhere. So I constructed my own musical pantheon by picking up stuff from everywhere, borrowing records from a library, getting interested in music from Africa, the Balkans, Asia, jazz, free jazz and blues."
