#ThomasDolby - Whodini - Magic’s Wand (1982)

Een weekje de spots op een zonderlinge en intrigerende figuur, die als muzikant, producer of innovator tout court sporen achter liet, die meer dan de moeite lonen om op in te zoomen: Thomas Dolby.

Thomas Dolby, Brit (Londen) van geboorte, verhuisde begin jaren tachtig naar de Verenigde Staten, waardoor sommigen van mening zijn dat de man Amerikaan is. Eén van zijn eerste professionele producties in New York was een atypische, met name van een hiphopgroep, Whodini, met wie hij samen Magic’s Wand schreef en producete. Whodini was het tweetal Jali Hutchins en Ecstasy, die uit de New Yorkse, levendige hiphopscene kwamen en bij de eerste rappers hoorden, die een forse geut r&b in de muziek verwerkten en een reeks hits scoorden, te beginnen met deze Dolbyproductie uit 1982.

Als je goed luistert, hoor je duidelijk de ingrediënten van Dolby's elektronische toetsenbijdragen. Thomas Dolby : "In the early days when I first came into the States, I used to go clubbing a lot in the New York area. And I'd become aware of a new sort of crossover sound that Afrika Bambaataa had started when he sampled Kraftwerk. And Kraftwerk had always been one of my electronic heroes. It just seemed very bizarre that in clubs in the south Bronx, people were dancing to these German aristocrats, and I just thought that was a great connection there. So it was exciting, there was clearly something exciting going on there. I hooked up with Whodini after sending the demo tape to the music publisher Zomba, who had launched the label Jive Records. Whodini was one of the acts on the label, and Zomba put me together with the New York rap trio.”

Whodini bleef regelmatig touren tot John “Ecstasy” Fletcher in december 2020 overleed op zesenvijftigjarige leeftijd.
