James Jewel Osterberg aka Iggy Pop is een man van veel seizoenen. Het Iggy-Stooges-schap in onze kast is goed gevuld. En benevens de vele punkrockanthems zitten er ook veel verrassende kanten aan zijn discografie. Dan kom je al snel bij Kill City terecht, alwaar Iggymans de Stonesvoorkeuren luid en duidelijk laat klinken. Want Iggy is een diehard Stonesfan en zijn favoriete Stonesplaat is '12 X 5' uit 1964, de tweede Stonesplaat die in Amerika uitkwam en Pop maakte er nooit een geheim van dat hij de vocale dynamiek en podiumstrapatsen leende van James Brown en Mick Jagger.
In Kill City kleuren de Keith Richardsriff en de songtinten erg Stones. The Stooges splitten begin 1974 en zouden pas in 2003 terug bij elkaar komen. In de zomer van 1975 vervoegde Stooges-gitarist James Williamson opnieuw Iggy Pop om enkele songs te schrijven, waaronder Kill City, maar bij gebrek aan geld kwamen ze er pas twee jaar later in 1977 aan toe om de volledige plaat af te ronden en uit te brengen.
James Williamson zegt over het nummer: "Kill City was written as the last song to the group of songs we would record as the album 'Kill City'. Ben Edmonds, who had been instrumental in arranging Jimmy Webb's home studio to record in, felt like we were missing a hook song to round out the material we had come up with. The riff for Kill City just came to me one day, and was just barely written when we went into the studio. Turned out to be the pivotal track and title track."
De track heeft het niet over thuisstad Detroit, maar over Los Angeles, waar ze de plaat opnamen: "Where the debris meets the sea" en "It's a playground to the rich but it's a loaded gun to me". Over de vele verleidingen van Los Angeles, vooral als je een beetje geld bezit. En Pop zong: “It's all great fun until you wind up in some bathroom / overdosed and on your knees.”
Williamson diende Iggy Pop uit rehab te halen om de plaat af te werken: "I did the vocals on weekend leave from the psych unit I was in screaming mental pain when I did it." Even later, in 1981, zou Iggy Pop zelfs even touren als support van The Stones met een fantastische groep met Carlos Alomar (David Bowie) op gitaar en Clem Burke (Blondie) op drums.
In de Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, zijn thuisstad, werd hij als van oudsher bekogeld. Een toeschouwer herinnert het zich nog: “Throwing things at Iggy and general mayhem had been part and parcel of Iggy appearances around Detroit for over a decade at that point. He did his brief set, had things thrown and spat at him, gave as good as he got - and was gone. Folks might THINK they booed him off but a crowd of eighty thousand surly folks was no problem for the Iggster. He appeared with them there on two successive nights. Santana followed and most of the fair-weather fans thought he was the best act of the night.”
