#RickenbackerRules - The Who - The Kids Are Alright (1966)
De Rickenbacker, die prachtige, Amerikaanse semi-akoestische gitaar met de ronde vorm in vintage kleuren die zowel in zessnarige als in twaalfsnarige vorm menige rock-'n-rollklassieker zo typische inkleurde. Er zijn er zoveel dat het niet bij één week kon blijven. En dus gaan we twee weken lang de hort op met songs, ingespeeld met die fantastische gitaar.
Nog een gitaarheld par excellence en Rickenbacker-afficianado: Pete Townshend, die op een aantal singles van The Who de Rickenbacker-gitaarklank prominent op de voorgrond mixte. Zoals op The Kids Are Alright, één van die Who-anthems die een hele generatie mods honoreerde als authentieke Britse en stijlvolle rebellen.
Behalve de Rickenbacker was ook de inbreng van Keith Moon op drums zeer bijzonder. Hij gebruikte op The Kids Are Alright de cimbalen en toms om de vocale lijnen van Daltrey te benadrukken door ze te laten crashen op het einde van de zin.
'The Kids Are Alright' werd als titel gerecycleerd voor de fijne rockumentaire uit 1979 over The Who, een jaar na het overlijden van Keith Moon, de film eindigt symbolisch met een omhelzing van Moon en Townshend. En het is geweten, Townshend was niet altijd even lief voor zijn genummerde gitaren. Hij mag het zelf even uitleggen: “To bring some of the early Who songs to life I decided to buy some Rickenbacker twelve string guitars, as used on our very first single I Can’t Explain. The problem was that I wasn’t used to the shape, weight or set up of these instruments. I’d forgotten that they are very delicate, lightly made. Indeed, my entire guitar-smashing reputation had been triggered when I was just nineteen years old when one of them literally fell apart, as I was making the noises of war using feedback. I had decided there and then to smash it, making my very first statement on stage of art with an ”autodestructive” function…I think I thought that would be the end of the band, and me, and I would continue quietly at art college.
In fact the guitar smashing ignited something in the audience and the word got out. In the first years of work with The Who in 1964 and 1965 I smashed about seven Rickenbackers, but never another until 1989, and the one offered here is the only one to survive, even in pieces…One day on the 1989 tour…I got into a muddle with the guitar strap on one of my ready-to-play Rickenbacker twelve strings after a string break, and was trying to swap it when it fell to the ground and the neck was smashed. Here was another opportunity for autodestruction al la 1964! No longer nineteen years old, and no longer at art college, I did my best. I tried to look angry, but I was merely flustered, and laughed about it later. I finished it off, and the pieces were gathered by my guitar technician.
Later, I mounted the pieces as an installation, and that is on offer here. I will never smash another Rickenbacker again, and certainly never mount one as a trophy in this way…I am including here the other twelve string guitar from the same tour – both of these instruments were played many times during that anniversary tour…"
Vandaag de dag kan je op de officiële Rickenbackersite de Pete Townshend Limited Edition Model 1997PT niet meer kopen. Er werden er ongeveer tweehonderdvijftig van gemaakt, uiteraard genummerd en authentiek verklaard (met certificaat!) door de President van Rickenbacker, de heer John Hall. Destijds telde je daar destijds 1.225 dollar voor neer, maar intussen zijn het allicht zeer gewilde objecten en het veelvuldige waard (wij vonden er één voor 4.500 dollar), als Pete ze intussen niet in handen heeft gekregen, smashing a perfectly good guitar.
