#RickenbackerRules - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River (1969)
De Rickenbacker, die prachtige, Amerikaanse semi-akoestische gitaar met de ronde vorm in vintage kleuren die zowel in zessnarige als in twaalfsnarige vorm menige rock-'n-rollklassieker zo typische inkleurde. Er zijn er zoveel dat het niet bij één week kon blijven. En dus gaan we twee weken lang de hort op met songs, ingespeeld met die fantastische gitaar.
Een kerstsverhaal met een Rickenbacker, bestaat dat? Ja, dat bestaat.
De grote manitou van Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty, verdeelde zijn tijd meestal tussen zijn Fender Telecasters en Rickenbackers. Zo ergens midden 1973 was Fogerty bezig in zijn repetitielokaal. CCR was net behoorlijk bitter geëindigd en hij wist niet goed wat voor hem lag en hoe daarmee om te gaan. Twee local kids, twaalf jaar oud, Rick en Louie, die altijd rondhingen in de buurt van het lokaal, waren stomverbaasd toen ze van Fogerty zijn 1969 Rickenbacker 325 cadeau kregen: “"I was just detached and numb at that point. And The Rick had been my main CCR guitar for several years… I think I gave it away to sort of end that chapter of my life."
Hij had deze Rick gehanteerd voor ongeveer elke song in standaardstemming op iedere CCR-plaat vanaf Bayou Country in 1969 tot Mardi Gras in 1972. Het was de gitaar die hij hanteerde op Woodstock en in de Ed Sullivan Show en ondermeer op Up Around The Bend, Travelin Band en dit Green River. "Green River is really about this place where I used to go as a kid on Putah Creek, near Winters, California", legt hij uit. "I went there with my family every year until I was ten. Lot of happy memories there. I learned how to swim there. There was a rope hanging from the tree. Certainly dragonflies, bullfrogs. There was a little cabin we would stay in owned by a descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody. That's the reference in the song to Cody Jr. ("Up at Cody's camp I spent my days").
The actual specific reference, Green River, I got from a soda pop-syrup label. You used to be able to go into a soda fountain, and they had these bottles of flavored syrup. My flavor was called Green River. It was green, lime flavored, and they would empty some out over some ice and pour some of that soda water on it, and you had yourself a Green River."
Maar hij gaf ze dus weg, die Rickenbacker waarop hij Green River had gespeeld. Tot hij ze twintig jaar later stomweg terug tegenkwam in Norman’s Rare Guitars, een vintageshop in Tarzana, California alwaar ze voor iets te veel geld te koop werd aangeboden. Fogerty: "I just looked at [Norman] and the guitar, shook my head and said, 'I'm not doing that' “.
Maar Fogerty's vrouw Julie ging in 2017 opnieuw op zoek en intussen was ze verkast naar Gary’s Classic Guitars in Loveland Ohio. Kerst 2017 in de familie Fogerty, alles is uitgepakt en John merkt een laatste grote doos op, waarbij hij opgedragen wordt om ze te openen en: een oude bekende. "I was immediately struck dumb. I turned to my wife and said, 'Am I about to get overwhelmed here?' I never imagined I'd see it again. It didn't take long to plug in the ax for the first time in more than 40 years. I started playing the solo in Green River, and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. It was exactly that sound, One hundred percent."
