#PittigeMadammen - The Go-Go’s - Our Lips Are Sealed (1981)
We gaan hier niet flauw over doen: de dames in de (rock- en pop)muziek werden altijd al onderbelicht. Tijd om daar verandering in te brengen. Een beetje dan toch.
Recent nog de fantastische docu op Canvas gezien waarin een bende gepassioneerde madammen vanuit de LA punkscene op een mum van tijd naar de sterren schiet: The Go-Go’s. En Our Lips Are Sealed slaagt erin om, ook na veertig jaar, een kamerbrede smile op onze tronie te schilderen.
Geschreven door gitariste Jane Wiedlin samen met Terry Hall van The Specials waarmee ze de affiche deelden: "In 1980 we were playing at The Whisky on Sunset Strip, and The Specials were in town from England. They came to see us, and they really liked us and asked us if we would be their opening act on their tour. I met Terry Hall, the singer of The Specials, and ended up having kind of a romance. He sent me the lyrics to Our Lips Are Sealed later in the mail, and it was kind of about our relationship, because he had a girlfriend at home and all this other stuff. So it was all very dramatic. I really liked the lyrics, so I finished the lyrics and wrote the music to it, and the rest is history. And then his band, The Fun Boy Three, ended up recording it, too - they did a really great version of it, also. It was like a lot gloomier than the Go-Go's' version."
Het werd een wereldhit voor The Go-Go’s en debuutplaat 'Beauty And The Beat' was ook een voltreffer met - ongewoon voor een damesgroep in die tijd - zelf gepende songs, bakken zelfvertrouwen en uitstraling en het geluk dat het nieuwe muziekstation MTV de clips onmiddellijk oppikte. De lp was dan ook de eerste nummer één (zes weken op rij) voor een zogenaamde all-girl-band.
Terry Hall nam het nummer dus ook nog eens op met Fun Boy Three, waarover producer Richard Gottehrer: "The recordings are vastly different. They're both really good records. Fun Boy Three comes from a more serious place. I wouldn't say sinister, but it isn't as light as the rumors being spread in the Go-Go's version."
In haar memoires, 'All I Ever Wanted', schreef Go-Go’s bassiste Kathy Valentine over deze song: "The Go-Go's put our distinctive stamp on the arrangement and music. The parts fit together like the links of a chain, from the chugging chord intro, solid beat, and rolling bass to Charlotte's chiming arpeggio guitar notes. Instead of a common stand-alone chorus, the key lines come as a refrain at the end of each verse. Belinda sang with authority and exuberance, and the lyrics told a relatable story - it could be about friends, coworkers, or lovers. The bridge is a short, shining interlude with guitar and bass interplay behind Jane singing. It sets up perfectly the soaring verse and chorus to end the song."
