#Pedalsteel - Neil Young - Out On The Weekend (1972)
Wikipedia zegt: “The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati—characteristics it shares with the human voice." Wij maakten een puur arbitraire keuze van het moment, want er zijn er veel, heel veel. Mooie, meeslepende songs met die typische, melanscholische twang.
Neil Young is bijzonder trouw aan zijn "personeel", dat is geweten. De pedalsteel op Out On The Weekend van het historische 'Harvest' is van de hand van Ben Keith, die meer dan veertig jaar aan zijn zijde hand- en snaardiensten verleende. Verleden tijd inderdaad, de man - echte naam Bennett Keith Schaeufele - overleed in 2010 op eenenzeventigjarige leeftijd aan een hartaanval, terwijl hij op de Broken Arrow Ranch van Neil Young in Noord-California verbleef. Ook zijn staat van dienst leest als een popencyclopedie met bijdragen aan het werk van Patsy Cline, Terry Reid, Todd Rundgren, Lonnie Mack, The Band, Blue, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Paul Butterfield, J.J. Cale, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Ian and Sylvia, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Tompall Glaser, Anne Murray en Ringo Starr.
Out On The Weekend werd opgenomen in Nashville in 1971 met een groep sessiemuzikanten later beter gekend als The Stray Gators bestaande uit Jack Nitzsche (piano), Ben Keith (steelgitaar), Tim Drummond (basgitaar) en Kenny Buttrey (drums). Vreemd genoeg was niet iedereen opgezet met The Stray Gators, want journalist John Mendelsohn schreef in 1972 in Rolling Stone weinig vleiend: "The Stray Gators, pale miserably in comparison to the memory of Crazy Horse, of whose style they do a flaccid imitation on such tracks as Out On The Weekend, Harvest and Heart Of Gold. Where the Crazies kept their accompaniment hypnotically simple with a specific effect in mind (to render most dramatic rhythmic accents during choruses and instrumental breaks), the Gators come across as only timid, restrained for restraint's sake, and ultimately monotonous." De geschiedenis is anders uitgedraaid en Crazy Horse was nu eenmaal een heel ander soort begeleidingsgroep en niet te vergelijken met the Stray Gators.
