#Pedalsteel - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Teach Your Children (1970)
Wikipedia zegt: “The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati—characteristics it shares with the human voice." Wij maakten een puur arbitraire keuze van het moment, want er zijn er veel, heel veel. Mooie, meeslepende songs met die typische, melanscholische twang.
Hij staat op het legendarische 'Déjà Vu', waarvoor Crosby, Stills & Nash vervoegd werden door de jonge getalenteere Canadees Neil Young. Maar niet op dit nummer. Hier speelt hij niet mee. Wel was er een gastbijdage van Jerry Garcia van The Grateful Dead, die zijn kunsten op de pedalsteel etaleert. In ruil voor harmonielessen van CSN&Y, die hij nodig had voor de "akoestische" periode van The Dead, leende hij zijn pedalsteel uit, een instrument dat hij zelf ook nog niet lang beheerste en die je uitgebreid kan horen op 'Workingman’s Dead' en 'American Beauty' van the Grateful Dead.
Teach Your Children werd geschreven door Graham Nash over de troebele relatie met zijn vader, die vantijds in de gevangenis verbleef: "The idea is that you write something so personal that every single person on the planet can relate to it. Once it's there on vinyl it unfolds, outwards, so that it applies to almost any situation. Teach started out as a slightly funky English folk song but Stephen (Stills) put a country beat to it and turned it into a hit record."
Naar verluidt ('Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young', het boek uit 2019) werd het nummer geschreven onder invloed van hash en aangeleerd aan de rest van de groep in één studiodag: "When I wrote Teach Your Children and Our House, we didn't know what we were doing. 'This sounds pretty fun, we can sing this, let's do it!' And then all of a sudden people are singing it back to me forty years later."
Niet lang nadat Nash het nummer schreef, bezocht hij een kunstgalerij en zag hij twee foto’s die de inhoud van de song goed weergaven: de foto van Diane Arbus 'Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park' en de foto van Arnold Newman 'Portrait of German industrialist Alfried Krupp'. "I put the 'Hand Grenade' photograph next to a picture of Krupp, who was the German arms magnate whose company was probably responsible for millions of deaths. It was an eerie photograph, a portrait, and the lighting is weird and his eyes are dark - a great image. And looking at them together I began to realize that what I'd just written [Teach Your Children] was actually true, that if we don't start teaching our children a better way of dealing with each other we're f--ked and humanity itself is in great danger", aldus nog Graham Nash.
