#NatalieMerchantKiest - Mystère Des Voix Bulgares - Pritouri Se Planinata

Eén van de meest waardige van 10 000 maniakken is de elegante Natalie Merchant. De Amerikaanse neo-folk zangeres geeft deze week een inkijk in haar muzikale invloeden.

Legendarische producer Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention en later ook R.E.M. en 10.000 Maniacs) nam Natalie Merchant midden jaren tachtig mee naar een concert van Trio Bulgarka, de eerste kennismaking met Balkanmuziek. "Sometimes the lyrics are about buying a cow, but the way the women use their voices in a guttural way really spoke to me emotionally", zegt ze daarover.

Onder invloed van deze nieuw ontdekking volgde ze Balkan-danskampen om muziek en ritme beter te begrijpen, maar het ging haar petje te boven: "What’s the counting like ? ‘Apple, apple, pineapple, pineapple…’ That’s the only way I can count on it, with words rather than numbers, otherwise I get too caught up in thinking, ‘Where’s the one ?’".

Het was het 4AD-label (met releases van Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Bauhaus, Pixies, Throwing Muses en vooral ook This Mortal Coil) dat Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares lanceerde. 4AD-baas Watts-Russel over deze ontdekking: "My introduction to Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares was fantastic. I was helping Pete Murphy, the singer from Bauhaus, make his first solo record. And at the end of the first day in the studio Pete pulled out a cassette and said, 'Right, we are going to listen to this at the end of the end of every night.' I was standing up behind the mixing desk getting ready to go home, and I was like, 'Oh, all right Pete', popped the cassette in, and this track started up. The fog of memory will tell me that my knees literally buckled. But I think I was huddled in a little room behind the mixing desk and I was very tired and when it came on it just hit me emotionally and so I just simply sat down. So that was my introduction. It's one of two solo voices, as opposed to choral things"

Geen echte groep dus, maar eerder een compilatie van Bulgaarse volksliedjes die doorheen de jaren waren opgenomen door het vrouwelijke staatskoor van de Bulgaarse radio en tv en al in 1975 ontdekt door de Zwitserse musicoloog Marcel Cellier die de archieven van Radio Sofia had uitgepluisd. Vooral dit nummer Pritouri Se Planinata sloeg ons met complete verstomming. Zoveel wonderlijke harmonieën en zangpatronen die op een bizarre manier tot de verbeelding spreken. Veel van die patronen inspireerden ook groepen als Dead Can Dance en This Mortal Coil in de klankkleur. Zelfs Laïs heeft hier heel goed naar geluisterd. Geen idee waarover de Bulgaarse dames het hebben maar bloedmooi gezongen is het wel! Of om het nog eens te zeggen met een quote van de (her)ontdekker Watts-Russell: "It's timeless. It was timeless and it always will be timeless."
