#MarrKiest - T.Rex - Metal Guru - (1972)

In de vakantie mag het tempo ietsje losser en maken we graag gebruik van andere bronnen. Daarom mag ex-Smith Johnny Marr zijn favoriete platen aanprijzen, zoals hij dat in een recente Record Collector deed.

Ondanks het feit dat de meeste T.Rex-fans 'Electric Warrior' vooruit schuiven als favoriete plaat, viel Johnny Marr eerder voor 'The Slider', omdat hij de songs sterker achtte, de productie beter. Marc Bolan bulkt van het vertrouwen en draait de T.Rex-tasy op elf.

Vooral het openingsnummer en single Metal Guru was een onvergetelijke piekervaring voor Marr toen die uitkwam: “To this day, if I hear Metal Guru it still has tinges of that for me. I don’t feel compelled to jump on my push bike and ride until it goes dark because I don’t know what to do with that feeling, wich is exactly what happened when I saw him play it on Top of the Pops. That’s the record I can point to if I ever have a doubt that pop music can be completely mystical and this album has that feeling all of the way through it. It expresses a feeling that is better than normal life.”

Jaren later, toen Marr al in The Smiths zat, kreeg hij van de nazaten van Bolan de mastertapes van Metal Guru voor een remix. Na twee dagen knoeien gaf hij het op, want hij wou telkens weer naar de originele opname die onevenaarbaar bleek. Het inspireerde wel de Smithssingle Panic uit 1986: “I wasn’t trying to do it as an hommage to Metal Guru but nor was I trying to hide it. Morrissey showed me the title written down on a piece of card on the tour bus and when I saw the word panic I just heard the chord change and the riff from Metal Guru in my head and I was looking for that drama. Sometimes with your influences it’s like writing an essay and using a quotation.”
