#MarrKiest - The Four Tops - Walk Away Renee (1968)

In de vakantie mag het tempo ietsje losser en maken we graag gebruik van andere bronnen. Daarom mag ex-Smith Johnny Marr zijn favoriete platen aanprijzen, zoals hij dat in een recente Record Collector deed.

Johnny Marr had jonge ouders en zijn moeder had altijd wel de radio aan staan. The Four Tops waren aldus een huisfavoriet.

De meeste mensen hebben een favoriete Motown-groep. We houden allemaal van The Tracks Of My Tears en van Marvin Gaye en The Temptations, maar Marr besloot jaren geleden al dat The Four Tops de beste Motown-groep is vanwege de grootsheid van de singles die hij ongeëvenaard acht. De combinatie van de sterke compositie en het arrangement versterkten de kracht van hoofdzanger Levi Stubbs.

Marrs voorliefde voor orkestratie en arrangementen stamt daaruit en hij roemt hun filosofische insteek die ietsje verder ging dan de liefdesliedjes van The Supremes of The Temptations. Een soort van existentieel verlangen van iemand die heel hard voor iets gaat. Of zoals hij het zelf zegt: “I used to go bananas in The Smiths days over Walk Away Renee. We used to play The Left Banke’s version before we went on as intro music. I always had this little warm-up thing that I did on the guitar playing this finger-picking version of it. It was something I played since I was really young. It was so beautiful and it was something I used to play to make myself feel a bit better when I was feeling melancholic. Sometime in ’85 when Billy Bragg was doing his second album, he asked me whether I had any tunes, and I played this little thing that I used to to do in the dressing room with The Smiths an he wrote this fantastic spoken word song over the top of it which I really didn’t see coming. It was for the b-side of Levi Stubbs’ Tears’ wich is a really clever song".
