#LucindaKiest - Van Morrison - Snow In San Anselmo (1973)
We laten nog eens een weekje een eloquent muzikant aan de keuzeknoppen. Altcountrysuperster Lucinda Williams timmert met wisselend succes al veertig jaar aan de weg met scherpe analyses over het reilen en zeilen in de wereld, gecombineerd met reflecties over het woelige, persoonlijke leven. Op de koop toe hanteert ze een uitgesproken muzikale smaak, die we deze week graag toelichten.
Om de Lucinda Williams-jukebox af te sluiten kiezen we voor een traditionele bard, die niet verlegen zit om af en toe op de eigen grimgrommende manier zichzelf subtiel heruit te vinden.
Titelnummer van een plaat uit 1973, die minder vaak geciteerd wordt als een bepalende Van Morrison. Met de vocale hulp van het Oakland Symphony Chamber Chorus. Het koorarrangement werkt perfect tegen de achtergrond van een folksoul-ritmesectie.
Het nummer gaat over de eerste sneeuw die San Anselmo in Californië in meer dan dertig jaar bereikte. Van Morrison in Mojo in 2012: "I was driving and it started to snow and a deer crossed by the list past the car and there was a drunk who looked like a madman looking for a fight. That's what I saw. That's the song." Lucinda Williams over haar aanvaring met dit schilderachtige nummer: “The summer after my first semester at the University of Arkansas, I went to visit my mom in New Orleans. I went down to the French Quarter because someone had told me about this little club called Andy’s, where they had singer-songwriters playing. I auditioned, and I got the gig for two or three nights a week. I was on cloud nine, even though it was just for tips. I was supposed to go back to school in the fall, and the big turning point was when I called my dad and told him I didn’t want to. To this day, I still think, What would have happened had he not said “OK”? But he understood and he gave me his blessing".
"I remember first hearing Van Morrison’s Snow In San Anselmo around that time and thinking, wow, how interesting, because he says he’s in a pancake house. I can remember being in a lot of those in that time, because nobody had any money, so we’d go to IHOP. In the song, this waitress comes over, and he’s in California, but all of a sudden it started snowing, which is an unusual thing. The song is just so conversational, but it’s sung as only Van Morrison could sing it.”
