#LucindaKiest - The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand(1963)

We laten nog eens een weekje een eloquent muzikant aan de keuzeknoppen. Altcountrysuperster Lucinda Williams timmert met wisselend succes al veertig jaar aan de weg met scherpe analyses over het reilen en zeilen in de wereld, gecombineerd met reflecties over het woelige, persoonlijke leven. Op de koop toe hanteert ze een uitgesproken muzikale smaak, die we deze week graag toelichten.

I Want To Hold Your Hand was de eerste en zeker niet de laatste Beatles-song die aansloeg in de Verenigde Staten. Oorspronkelijk vonden ze het zelfs geen "major deal" om de singles te verdelen en de eerste drie singles Please Please Me, From Me To You, en She Loves You werden op kleine labels uitgebracht en flopten ondanks de gigantische hitstatus in thuisland Groot-Brittannië.

Maar de manie deed Capitol Records toch overrstag gaan en de eerste release I Want To Hold Your Hand vloog met gepaste viertrapsraket richting nummer één (in februari 1964) en blijft de best verkochte single in de Verenigde Staten met iets meer dan twaalf miljoen exemplaren. En dat was ook ten huize Lucinda Williams niet onopgemerkt gebleven: “In 1963, we were living in Santiago, Chile. My father was a poet and a professor, and he was awarded a grant to teach and write in another country for a year, so he picked Chile. I went to school there. I would hear I Want To Hold Your Hand all the time on the radio there. That’s how far the Beatles reached! After we moved back to America—to Baton Rouge, Louisiana—I used to go over to my cousin’s house, and we would listen to the Beatles and play with our Barbie dolls. It was full Beatlemania. My favorite Beatle back then was Paul. Look, I was only ten, OK? Don’t judge my choices. Later on, it would be George.”

Capitol Records was tevreden met de strategie en het nummer zou zeven weken op nummer één verblijven en de initiële flop She Loves You werd heruitgebracht en ging recht naar nummer één om I Want To Hold Your Hand simpelweg af te lossen. Beatlemania US was een feit!

I Want to Hold Your Hand werd geschreven in de huiskamer van Pete Asher, de broer van McCartneys toenmalige vriendin Jane Asher: "My mother had a practice room that she used to give private oboe lessons when she wasn't teaching at The Royal Academy, where she was a professor. There was just a piano, and an upright chair and a sofa. Paul used that room to write in, from time to time. One afternoon John came over, while I was upstairs in my room. The two of them were in the basement for an hour or so, and Paul called me down to listen to a song they had just finished. I went downstairs and sat on the sofa, and they sat side by side, on the piano bench. That's where they played I Want to Hold Your Hand for the first time anywhere. They asked me what I thought. I said, 'I think it's very good.'"
