#LucindaKiest - Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969)

We laten nog eens een weekje een eloquent muzikant aan de keuzeknoppen. Altcountrysuperster Lucinda Williams timmert met wisselend succes al veertig jaar aan de weg met scherpe analyses over het reilen en zeilen in de wereld, gecombineerd met reflecties over het woelige, persoonlijke leven. Op de koop toe hanteert ze een uitgesproken muzikale smaak, die we deze week graag toelichten.

Lucinda Williams leerde dit kennen op de middelbare school, toen ze met haar familie in New Orleans woonde: “I used to go over to my friend’s house after school and listen to Buffalo Springfield and smoke pot. Stephen Stills and Neil Young were in the band, and their solo music has really inspired me, too. Especially Neil Young’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere; he’s a huge influence. I never did graduate high school".

"I was a little activist back then and I haven’t changed one iota. We were in the Vietnam War, and it was the height of protesting. In home room, we all had to stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance when it came over the intercom system, but I would just stand up silently. I got suspended for that, and went home and told my dad, who was very progressive. He said, 'Honey, don’t worry about it. We’ll get you an ACLU lawyer and we’ll fight this thing.' And we did that, and [the ACLU] said it was unconstitutional for [the school] to have done that."

"My dad begged me to stay out of trouble for the rest of the year, but one day there was a huge march at school to protest racial inequality, and I joined it. The cops showed up, and I managed to get away from them—my dad wasn’t real happy about that one. But we were going to be moving to Mexico City the next year, anyway, for another visiting poetry grant, so I just never went back to high school after that. Despite bearing the same title as the album it appears on, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere wasn't generally considered one of the standout songs from Neil Young's second solo effort. Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand all were more popular and enduring."

"Still, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is an interesting song in its own right, and even more so when viewed as part of Young's broader catalogue. It's also intriguing to ponder why Young chose to name the album after this particular tune.” Young schreef het toen hij in Zuid-California verbleef en hij had niet zoveel op met de hectische ratrace in L.A., dat veel pretendeerde maar waar weinig opleverde. Hij hunkerde naar de eenvoud van het platteland, een gevoel dat wel vaker de kop opstak in zijn carrière.

Voor zijn familie in Canada betekende zijn verblijf in L.A. met de L.A.-lifestyle één en ander, maar hij relativeerde het in deze song. Het feit dat hij de hele plaat naar deze song vernoemde, versterkt het sentiment dat bijna in ieder nummer doorklinkt. De stem op het nummer was oorspronkelijk niet bedoeld om uitgebracht te worden, een gehavende stem die zong door een microfoon van lage kwaliteit van de mixtafel, maar Young hield van het contrast met de andere nummers en behield het zangspoor in de finale mix.

Kortste nummer (twee minuten en zesentwintig seconden) van de plaat, maar het werkt.
