#LucindaKiest - Morphine - Cure For Pain (1994)

We laten nog eens een weekje een eloquent muzikant aan de keuzeknoppen. Altcountrysuperster Lucinda Williams timmert met wisselend succes al veertig jaar aan de weg met scherpe analyses over het reilen en zeilen in de wereld, gecombineerd met reflecties over het woelige, persoonlijke leven. Op de koop toe hanteert ze een uitgesproken muzikale smaak, die we deze week graag toelichten.

Eén van die parels uit de nineties: Billy Conway, Dana Colley en Mark Sandman oftewel het schitterende trio Morphine.

Lucinda Williams was bevriend met frontman Mark Sandman: “We were once both signed to RCA and we stayed in touch over the years. More people should have known about Morphine while they were together. They took in the blues and jazz, a little bit of hip-hop, some poetry. They had a haunting quality. The few times I saw them, they didn’t have a big full drum kit. A lot of times, the drummer was just playing a cocktail drum, and then they had the guy playing horn, and then Mark was on bass. It wasn’t like a regular guitar-bass-drums kind of thing, but they pulled it off. They made it work, and it was brilliant. It was a tragedy when we lost Mark Sandman [in 1999].” Perfect juiste analyse maar het bleef helaas bij een cultstatus.

Ijzersterke songs in minimale setting met maximaal effect. Een sax, (beperkte) drums en een bas met slechts twee snaren. En dan die warme, rustgevende stem van Sandman. Voilà, de kerningrediënten voor een reeks schitterende, atmosferische platen. Ijzersterke melodieën ook op de titeltrack Cure For Pain. “Where’s all that money that I spent, I propose a toast to my self control, You see it crawling helpless on the floor, Someday there’ll be a cure for pain / That’s the day I throw my drugs away / When they find a cure for pain.” Sandman verloor het leven tijdens een optreden in Italië na een hartaanval. Het spijtige einde van een schoon sonisch verhaal.
