#Koortjes - Nick Cave - Push The Sky Away (2013)
Een eigenwijze keuze aan songs met koortjes is wat we u deze week voorschotelen.
Een schoolkoortje voor de heer Nicholas Edward Cave.
En als je in Saint-Rémy de Provence in het zuiden van Frankrijk aan het opnemen bent, is dat dan een Frans schoolkoortje. "None of them could speak a word of English and did all the singing phonetically but they gave the whole thing a very beautiful, eerie feel", aldus Nick Cave. En ze deden dat met verve op de magistrale titeltrack van 'Push The Sky Away'. Het koortje is bijna niet te horen, maar als je goed luistert, hoor je er waarachtig een extra dreiging van uitgaan.
De vijftiende langspeler was het al en de vierde op rij met producer Nck Launay, die koos voor La Fabrique, een negentiendeëeuws herenhuis dat tevens de grootste klasieke vinylcollectie van Frankrijk huisvest. Over de song en de boodschap vertelde Cave aan The Sun: "We all have this feeling of the world folding in on us. Whether it's environmental, the economy, nuclear or whatever, I don't think there's anyone on the planet who's walking around thinking things are okay. So to me, there's this idea that we need to carry on and do what we do. The song is optimistic in that respect. Of course it's impossible to push the sky away but we need to try."
Het werd nummer één in Australië, Oostenriujk, België, Portugal en Nederland en ook de hoogste notering in de Verenigde Staten ooit op negenentwintig. Primal Scream-zanger Bobby Gillespie vertelde aan Uncut dat hij in het publiek stond in september 2017 in de London O2 Arena voor de Skeleton Treetour. Wat hij helemaal niet verwachtte, was dat hij aan het eind van het concert nog even in duet ging: "He did his walkabout during Push The Sky Away. He was in the row behind me and I grabbed his leg and said 'Nick Nick!' And he shouted 'Bobby!' and then pulled me up and had me sing. He did the line, 'And some people say it's just rock and roll / but it gets you right down to your soul,' which I love, then he passed me the mic. I had to hope for the best. I did my version of the chorus, and it was alright. It was amazing, amazing. I tell you, I was flying after that." En dat klopt, want de bijgaande clip bewijst het en het Frans koortje wordt voor de gelegenheid overgenomen door een extatische zaal.
