#JukeboxPaultje - The Kinks - David Watts (1967)

In de vakantie mag het tempo ietsje losser en maken we graag gebruik van andere bronnen. Daarom mag Modvader Paul Weller zijn favoriete platen citeren zoals hij dat in een recente Record Collector (voor Chris Catchpole) deed. Een weekje juke-box-paultje, een mens gemaakt van muziek.

Uiteraard is Paul Weller een onvoorwaardelijke Kinks en/of Ray Daviesfan. Al vroeg in hun carrière zouden The Jam David Watts coveren op 'All Mod Cons' uit 1978: “We all know how great “The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society” (1968) is now, but no one spoke about it at all back then in 1968. It was really hard to find it. When I first went to the US in ’77 there were a lot of records that you could still get on vinyl that they weren’t selling in England anymore so I bought all of The Kinks’ albums from the 60’s in the US. I couldn’t find them at all in England, so it was stuff I’d never heard like 'Face to Face', 'Something Else' and 'Village Green'."

Ze waren een grote invloed op de schrijfstijl van Weller, het soort karakterstudies dat Ray Davies maakte was briljant en was bewust én onbewust iets dat hij opzoog en in zijn eigen schrijfstijl integreerde: “I was still trying to find my footing as a writer. I was still copying others like Pete Townshend en Ray Davies but this made me take my writing more seriously."

Weller vond met name hun tweede plaat 'This is the Modern World' een sof die hen bijna hun platendeal met Polydor kostte. Maar het moment dat hij zijn taak als tekstschrijver, onder invloed van Davies, ernstig(er) nam hetgeen op 'All Mod Cons' tot ontplooiing kwam en de goede kritieken, met name op zijn teksten, gaf hem het zelfvertrouwen om op deze lijn voort te borduren.

"I remember John Cooper Clarke reviewing 'Down in the Tube Station at Midnight' and he was saying it was a bit like a Play For Today on record. And I felt there was an audience there for us now wich made my writing more serious as a craft and something to really work on, as opposed to just nicking someone else’s song and putting vaguely different words on it….”
