#JukeboxPaultje - Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (1970)

In de vakantie mag het tempo ietsje losser en maken we graag gebruik van andere bronnen. Daarom mag Modvader Paul Weller zijn favoriete platen citeren zoals hij dat in een recente Record Collector (voor Chris Catchpole) deed. Een weekje juke-box-paultje, een mens gemaakt van muziek.

De jonge Paul Weller zag in 1975 een aantal foto’s van mods in de vroege jaren zestig en was onmiddellijk verkocht: “I just thought, ‘Fuck, this looks amazing’. I just didn’t think it was that far removed from what I’d already come out of, the whole suedehead thing. I just fell in love with it”. Op dat moment speelde hij al bijna ieder weekend en de opbrengsten gingen integraal naar platen. Hij focuste op Best Ofs en Greatest Hits. Vooral Motownspullen (de 'Looking Back'-reeks van Motown) en de Smokey Robinsons, Stevie Wonders en Martha Reeves’en vlogen hem om de oren.

Ook vroeg hij oudere standhouders van vinylstands op Soho Market wat hij moest horen en moest kopen: “We had a great DJ, Ady Croasdell who did sixties nights and worked for ACE Records. Later on he was our DJ on The Jam tours in de early eighties and he put me on to a lot of great stuff like this Move On Up which I only knew from the clubs but hearing that album made a big difference to me”. De teksten en boodschappen waren een grote invloed op Wellers manier van schrijven: “We covered Move On Up around that time, a brilliant writer, Curtis Mayfield with a great humanist touch writing from the point of view of a black man in America but he’s also writing for the whole of mankind as well. I got all of his solo stuff after that; all of those early albums are fucking brilliant.”
