#HarmonieuzeDames - The Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice (2006)
De Estse componist Arvo Pärt had overschot van gelijk, toen hij poneerde: “The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all.” Niets zo mooi als verschillende stemmen die elkaar vinden en de melodie en harmonie door elkaar vlechten. Simpele opdracht deze week: een hoogst eigenwijze keuze in een bataljon harmonieuze dames.
Toen Dixie Chick Natalie Maines zich tijdens een concert in London op 10 maart 2003 liet ontvallen dat ze beschaamd was dat de President (Bush) van Texas afkomstig was, werden ze in thuisland Amerika terstond weggehoond en verketterd. Radiostations weigerden hen te spelen en voedden de toorn, die zelfs leidde tot regelrechte doodsbedreigingen. Ware het niet voor Rick Rubin geweest, dan hadden we wellicht nooit meer iets gehoord van The Dixie Chicks (die tegenwoordig het woord Dixie uit de naam laten vallen).
Producer, platenbaas en muziekliefhebber Rubin haalde het adresboekje boven en bracht hen samen met song- en tekstschrijvers als Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Dan Wilson (Semisonic), Neil Finn (Crowded House), Linda Perry (Four Non Blondes), Sheryll Crow, Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) en Pete Yorn en produceerde een plaat die de oude countryroots van The Chicks mixte met Americana rockroots. En de dames kunnen spelen en zingen. Na drie jaar aan de schandpaal kwamen ze terug binnen langs de grote poort: plaat van het jaar en song van het jaar in 2007 en tweeënhalf miljoen exemplaren verkocht in de States alleen al.
Dit Not Ready To Make Nice was een statement waarover Emily Robison zei: "The stakes were definitely higher on that song. We knew it was special because it was so autobiographical, and we had to get it right. We've all gone through so many emotions about the incident. We talked for days with Dan Wilson before putting pen to paper, and he really helped get inside our heads and put these feelings out. And once we had this song done, it freed us up to do the rest of the album without that burden. We tried to write about the incident a few times, but you get nervous that you're being too preachy or too victimized or too nonchalant."
"Dan came in with an idea that was some kind of concession, more 'can't we all just get along?' and I said, 'nope, I can't say that, can't do it'. And we talked about it, and he said, 'what about "I'm not ready to make nice?" From the outside, normal people really weren't aware of how bizarre and absurd it got. Dan was really good at clueing in to that, saying something that didn't back down, but still had a vulnerability to it. This album was therapy. To write these songs allowed me to find peace with everything and move on."
