#HarmonieuzeDames - First Aid Kit - Emmylou (2012)
De Estse componist Arvo Pärt had overschot van gelijk, toen hij poneerde: “The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all.” Niets zo mooi als verschillende stemmen die elkaar vinden en de melodie en harmonie door elkaar vlechten. Simpele opdracht deze week: een hoogst eigenwijze keuze in een bataljon harmonieuze dames.
Vakantie in de Franse Alpen, zo ergens 2014, en van de compilatie-cd, die wij voor iedere familietrip zorgvuldig voorbereidden, was dit (samen met The Shins) dé hit van die zomer en werd binnen de kortste keren door de dochters meerstemmig meegekweeld.
Het is er dan ook eentje die bulkt van de fijne, melodisch in elkaar gevlochten zusterstemmen van Johanna en Klara Sörderberg, die niet uit Nashville maar uit Enskede bij Stockholm, Zweden komen. Een machtig duo, dat de nek uitsteekt voor de puurste Americana.
Ze gingen voor het eerst viraal en publiek met een cover van Tiger Mountain Peasant Song van Fleet Foxes in 2007. En hopla, ze werden compleet terecht ontdekt en getekend. Dit giga-eresaluut aan Emmylou (Harris en bij uitbreiding Johnny Cash, June Carter en Gram Parsons) komt van tweede plaat 'The Lion’s Roar'. De zusjes verklaarden aan een Engelse krant waar deze fascinatie ontstond: "The artists we mention in Emmylou are some of our all-time favourite singers and songwriters. They have inspired us endlessly and in a way this is a tribute to them. When they sing together it's an otherworldly power. You can hear the love seeping through those vocals chords. The song is about the intimate connection you get when you sing together. Johnny and June were obviously married and although Emmylou and Gram never were an official couple there are certainly rumours. To us the song is saying: 'We may not be able to be together, but at least we can sing together.'"
Klara, de belangrijkste tekstschrijver van de twee, is vaak argwanend over de muzikale suggesties van zus Johanna, zoals ze in Q Magazine verklaarde: "They're so annoying! Especially when she's saying that one part of a song could work with another part of another song I've written. I'm like, 'Are you crazy? That would sound terrible!' And then I play it and it sounds great, and then I'm like, 'Goddammit, you're right.' Even on Emmylou the verse for that was for another song, and I said to her, 'No you can't put those two together beside the lyrics mean so much to me...' But in the end it worked out."
En hoe! Hemels en je raakt het nooit ofte nimmer beu.
