#Go-Betweens - The Go-Betweens - Bachelor Kisses (1984)

Het was single Bachelor Kisses die ons bekeerde tot The Go-Betweens. Die klonk immers als zoete honing voor een roedel beren en onze fascinatie en eeuwige bewondering voor deze Aussies was geboren.

Miraculeus mooi nummer. En toen wij de lp 'Spring Hill Fair' in 1984 ontleenden aan de Mediatheque van de Passage 44 in Brussel, hebben we die tot tweemaal toe verlengd.

Volgens de zus van Mclennan zou het een perfecte song zijn voor Marianne Faithfull. De balans in het nummer is heel zorgvuldig verdeeld over het achterliggende bepalende keyboardtapijtje en de fijnzinnige gitaarpartijen. En dan de melodische stem van Mclennan: "Don't believe what you've heard / Faithful's not a bad word / Oh, won't you save these bachelor kisses now / they're for your brow."

Co-zanger Robert Forster zei over Bachelor Kisses in Rock’s Backpages: "Grant wrote this. It sounded like a pop song right from the word go. He was a very, very melodic songwriter. Bachelor Kisses was just something that rolled off and felt very natural and beautiful. It's amazing." McLennan zelf over de song: "I'm sorry if it sounds a courtly song but it's not about that. I see a lot of infidelity around me. Most people involved in music are guilty of it in many cases. I see a lot of trust, promises being broken – I'm guilty of it myself. It's about all the promises the world of men have made women as far as the future of their lives, security, the raising of children, and I've found it wanting. Not a unique thought.”

Recensent Mat Snow had het voor één keer helemaal bij het rechte eind, toen hij over de single schreef: "Only when we're confronted with a song so perfectly turned, lines so finely balanced and a melody so achingly sweet as Bachelor Kisses are we forced to notice how hollow most contemporary pop rings." Gelijk heeft hij.
