#Gitaarjumpstarters - The Raspberries - Go All The Way (1972)

Muziek is altijd en immer op één of andere manier aanwezig. Soms opvallend, soms puur als aangenaam geluidsbehang, maar er zijn een paar plaatjes, die ons terstond goesting doen krijgen om zo snel mogelijk zelf de gitaar op te nemen en aan de slag te gaan. En heel vaak zit het hem in die fijnzinnige gitaarriedel of onweerstaanbare riff, die een nummer verheffen tot dat sonische wondertje dat de hele dag als een oorwurm in je brein zal rondspoken.

Soms raak je bekend door wat dan heet de “verkeerde” dingen. The Raspberries-zanger Eric Carmen was niet enkel de voorman van dit pittige powerpopkwartet, maar scoorde na de split van The Raspberries in 1975 een joekel van een powerballad met All By Myself, een McCartney-achtige ballad die brokken maakte, maar definitief de nek omgewrongen werd door Celine Dion, die dit zeer vakkundig tot een onuitstaanbare oorwurm boetseerde midjaren negentig. Carmen zal er zeker niet slechter van geworden zijn en het was al niet minnetjes, aangezien ook ene Frank Sinatra het al aan het repertoire toevoegde.

Maar het ging hier over de prettige dingen gaan. En dat is Go All The Way zeker wel. Een wishfull thinking-song als het ware, waarbij het meisje de jongen overtuigt om “all the way” te gaan, geïnspireerd door Let’s Spend The Night Together van The Stones, dixit Carmen: "I knew then that I wanted to write a song with an explicitly sexual lyric that the kids would instantly get but the powers that be couldn't pin me down for."

Van debuutplaat 'The Raspberries' uit 1972 en de enige, echte hit ,alhoewel de drie lp’s vol staan met nummers die dezelfde hitpotentie in zich dragen. Eric Carmen nog over Go All The Way: "The year was 1971. I was twenty-one. I had been studying for years. I had spent my youth with my head between two stereo speakers listening to The Byrds and The Beatles and later on The Beach Boys - just trying to figure out what combinations of things - whether it was the fourths harmonies that The Byrds were singing on Mr. Tambourine Man - I must have worn out ten copies of that first Byrds album listening to it over and over, and turning off the left side and turning on the right side trying to figure out why these certain combinations of instruments and echo and harmonies made that hair on your arms stand up. I did the same thing with Beatles records, and I tried to learn construction."

"So when I sat down to write Go All The Way, there were a couple things I had in mind. I thought, 'What part of the song is it that people really want to hear? It's the chorus.' As a result of all that, Go All The Way has a 10-second verse, and then the chorus is a minute long. I figured just to get to the chorus as fast as I can. That was the plan behind the song. I repeated that when I wrote I Wanna Be With You.”

Potent potje powerpop dat zeer dicht in de buurt van Big Star resideert en goesting genereert om zelf een stukje te rammen.
