#GangOfFourSpinoffs - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can’t Stop (2002)
Om nog eens aan te tonen hoe groot de invloed van een groep als Gang of Four en een figuur als gitarist Andy Gill wel is (hij overleed op 1 februari precies een jaar geleden) gooien we er een weekje “spinoffs” tegenaan met nummers van groepen die niet onder stoelen of banken staken hoezeer ze Gang of Four adoreerden.
In 2011 verklaarde Andy Gill van Gang Of Four dat Red Hot Chili Peppers de carrière op zijn groep gebaseerd hadden. Met name Flea heeft ook nooit heel hard ontkend dat die band superbelangrijk voor hen was, maar om nu te stellen dat ze de hele carrière daarop gebaseerd hebben is wat te kort door de bocht. Andy Gill was nu eenmaal niet altijd even subtiel.
Lang voor 2011 was er liefde, veel liefde, die ervoor zorgde dat Andy Gill de debuutplaat van Red Hot Chili Peppers mocht producen, hetgeen niet overal op applaus werd onthaald, want vaak was de kritiek dat de productie te kil was voor een withete groep als Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Maar in 2011 zei Gill dan dat Can’t Stop wel heel erg goed geleend was: “The guitar on their single Can’t Stop was directly from one of our early songs and when I heard it I thought, ‘That’s going a bit far’. I bumped into [Chilis bassist] Flea at a party and he said, ‘Andy, I just don’t understand why you’ve never sued us’.” Maar Flea bleef loyaal, ook bij het onverwachte overlijden van Gill: “Andy Gill, one of my favorite guitar players of all time, has left us. Go listen to the Gang Of Four album 'Entertainment!' right now. Turn that shit up loud and rock the fuck out. Dance. Think,…Thats a record that changed my life forever, and was massively influential on my development as a musician, and showed me what a rock band could be. There is nothing else like it. It cut a fucking hole right the thick LA smog that I wanted to jump through. I am shocked. Andy was one of my heroes, a man who inspired the shit out of Hillel [Slovak], Anthony [Kiedis] and I as youngsters; I was thrilled beyond belief when he agreed to produce our first album. May his beautiful soul be in bliss with the divine, I love you Andy.” En daarmee is alles gezegd….
