#Coulrofobie - The Kinks - Death Of A Clown (1967)

Tijd voor een behoorlijk turbulente clownsong, want zoals met veel verhalen rond The Kinks, gaat dit gepaard met enige broederlijk stampen en dagen.
Death Of A Clown’ is een song van Dave Davies met enige hulp van broer Ray, in 1967 uitgebracht als solo-single, maar later toch meegenomen op de lp 'Something Else' van The Kinks. Het is ook de eerste vrouw van Ray Davies, Rasa, die de vrouwelijke stem inzingt en sessiepianist Nicky Hopkins (ook bij The Who en The Rolling Stones) zou de typische vintage klinkende piano inspelen, onder andere door het handmatig betokkelen van de pianosnaren.
Dave Davies over de oorsprong van de song: “Death Of A Clown was written about the repetitive performing schedule me and the rest of the Kinks worked through. One night I nodded off at a party and woke up and saw all these decadent people running around. I had a vision of being a circus clown. I thought, 'What are we doing?' We were going from day to day to day like performing seals. And that's where I got the idea for Death Of A Clown. I went back to me mum's house with the same old out-of-tune piano and I plunked out three notes, and it turned into the song.”
Het onmiddellijke succes van de single (nummer drie in de Britse hitlijst) deden hem dromen van een solo-carrière, maar die zou pas veel later, na 1980, ten volle ontplooien. Dave Davies: “It was all a metaphor for the way I felt. Everything in the sixties had been spontaneous and easy and fun. Now I started to see the cracks. I was buckling under the strain of all this bullshit. As a boy I used to hate going to the circus, so the song’s also related to that. The main thing was that clowns were frightening – this guy pretending to be happy with a funny face but with something weird going on behind the scenes. The music business is very like a clown’s mask.”
Grote broer Ray vond er plezier in om bij de bandvoorstelling hem steevast voor te stellen als “Dave ‘Death Of A Clown’ Davies”, als een soort van one-hit-wonder, hetgeen Dave enorm stoorde: “That used to be really upsetting. Something that was a big event for me, and a shedding of a lot of things in my life, had become an instrument of ridicule.” Hij weigerde om het nummer nog ooit te spelen. Om hem nog wat meer te jennen wou Ray het nummer niet opnemen in de Kinks-musical 'Sunny Afternoon'. Dave Davies: “In the play, George Maguire, playing me, sings two bars of it, then Ray’s character comes over and does something else. Even in the script for The Kinks film Julien Temple’s working on, Ray ends up singing it".
