#10ccEtcetera - 10cc - Rubber Bullets (1973)
We hebben het vaak voor doordacht en doorwrocht vakmanschap, ook in de muziek. Uiteraard is de oerschreeuw vanuit de buik hartelijk welkom, maar ook de minutieus in elkaar geknutselde poptop kan ons goedkeurend gegrom wegdragen. 10cc is zo'n groep, die vanuit de studio menige fantastische single en lp de wereld in stuurden. Pop met een knipoog en met een clevere baseline.
De week afslutien, doen we met onze favoriete 10cc-song. En het is keihard bikkelen. Is dat een obscure lp-track als The Sacro-Illiac of het warme deken en de meest onwaarschijnlijke hit ever I’m Not In Love? Dan toch maar het ongelofelijk catchy Rubber Bullets van het lp-debuut
Een compositie van Lol Creme, Kevin Godley en Graham Gouldman met een heerlijke, dubbele-snelheid-gitaarsolo van Eric Stewart: “That's a double track solo on that. It's very, very high, of course, going through a Marshall stack, then I slowed the tape to half speed – seven and a half [inches per second] – and recorded it, you know, going [plays singles picked notes slowly] and when you speed it back up you've got an octave up, but there's a screaming fuzz on the top of it, that's an octave higher than it was recorded. So it's a very unusual sound done in that way, just an experiment. Because 10cc, we love to experiment, we used to love to waste time. And having the beauty of having our own studio, we didn't have a clock in there so we weren't restricted.”
10cc was verbaasd, maar ook verrast dat de BBC de song niet bande, aangezien de BBC vermoedde dat de song ging over de conflicten in Noord-Ierland, terwijl de band het had over de Attica State Prison, zoals die passeerde in de geliefde James Cagneyfilms. Graham Gouldman: “Kevin and Lol had the chorus and part of the verse but then got stuck. We all loved the chorus and realised it was a hit in itself, so we wanted to persist with it. I chipped in the line 'We've all got balls and brains / but some's got balls and chains.' One of my finer couplets. Although the song was not banned by the BBC at the time of release, it was later banned for the duration of the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991”. Ook maf hoe drummer Godley wanhopig moet doen alsof hij drumt zonder de cymbalen echt te raken.
